Counselling for Eating Issues

Picture
Some of my counselling work has a focus on eating and body image issues (including but not limited to anorexia, bulimia and binge eating). I have over 20 years experience supporting, educating, writing about, counselling and thinking about the nature of disordered eating and its impacts on our lives.

I was the founding coordinator of the Eating Difficulties Education Network (EDEN) and held a number of roles there including working as a counsellor. I was a trustee on the NZ Trust for the Prevention of Sub-Clinical Eating Disorders. I co-authored the EDEN resource and training programme: ‘Nourish'. I helped establish the EDEN counselling service.

In my counselling practice I work from a broadly narrative approach, which means:
  • Exploring how eating or body image difficulties have become and continue to be problematic in a person’s life
  • Generating ideas for moving away from eating issues
  • Developing resources and strengths that support change
I see value in supporting people to move from an evaluative (often critical) view of their bodies to a more appreciative relationship and also to imagine and enjoy life beyond eating issues.

If you can relate to any of these questions below then counselling might be helpful for you:
  • Are you concerned about the amount of time and energy you spend thinking about your body and weight?
  • Are you always on a diet? Do you binge eat?
  • Do you spend time feeling ‘not good enough’?
  • Do you compare your body negatively with other bodies?
  • Do you exercise excessively or when injured or unwell?
  • Do you feel out of control around food?
  • Is your relationship with food characterised by guilt/shame/conflict?
  • Do you engage in any of the following ‘weight control’ behaviours: restriction or fasting, vomiting, smoking, using laxatives, over exercising?
  • Is your life and health negatively affected by eating and body image issues?

I am happy to have a conversation with anyone considering counselling. I encourage people to make an initial appointment where you can experience how I work and decide on possibilities for future work together.
